Nitrogen

Nutrien is the third-largest nitrogen producer in the world, with over seven million tonnes of gross ammonia capacity and the ability to produce more than 11 million tonnes of total nitrogen products in the US, Canada, and Trinidad.

Production and distribution

A low-cost and diversified production network

We produce nitrogen at nine strategically located production facilities throughout Canada, the US, and Trinidad and operate four regional product upgrade sites in North America. Our transportation and distribution network leverages truck, rail, pipeline, barge, and marine vessel modes, including direct access to tidewater in the US and Trinidad.

Nitrogen 101

What is nitrogen and where does it come from?

Nitrogen (N) is one of the building blocks of life. About 80 percent of the air we breathe is nitrogen. Plants use it once it becomes ammonium or nitrate through industrial or natural processes.

How it works

1. Ammonia plant

Ammonia is synthesized from natural gas, air, and steam.

2. Downstream plants

Our nitrogen products (including ammonia) can be sold as is or upgraded to value-added products.

3. Finished product and primary uses

  • Ammonia (fertilizers and industrial)
  • Urea (fertilizers, feed, and industrial)
  • Nitric acid (industrial)
  • Ammonium nitrate (industrial)
  • Solutions (fertilizers and industrial)

Primary distribution methods

Rail, truck, vessel, and pipeline.

Annual low-carbon* ammonia production capability

*Low-carbon ammonia is ammonia made with direct GHG emissions typically reduced by approximately 60 percent but up to 80 percent compared to a conventional process, produced primarily using carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) or other low-emission production technologies. This definition does not include end product use.
Products and uses

What is nitrogen used for?

Nitrogen (N) is required by every living cell. It’s a fundamental building block of plant proteins that improve crop yield and quality and is essential for proper animal nutrition and maturation.

Fertilizer

Essential for protein synthesis and speeds up plant growth.

Feed

Plays a key role in animal growth and development.

Industrial

Used to make industrial products like plastics, resins, adhesives, and emission control.
