Global Fertilizer Day: How Nutrien’s operations are Feeding the Future
October 13 marks Global Fertilizer Day, and the teams at Nutrien’s Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potash facilities are proud to be doing their part to serve the needs of growers and help feed the world’s growing population.
The global population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, and improving global food security isn’t possible without the use of commercial fertilizers. To meet growing food demand, Fertilizer Canada estimates that over the next 30 years, the world will need to increase food production by 70 percent.
At Nutrien, we produce and distribute over 26 million tonnes of potash, nitrogen and phosphate products to customers around the world. Our essential fertilizer products help growers increase yields and cultivate more nutritious crops.
We’re excited to celebrate Global Fertilizer Day, and we’re proud to be part of an industry that’s helping feed the world’s growing population. The Fertilizer Institute has deemed this year’s theme Made Possible by Fertilizer because Feeding the Future depends on a steady supply of fertilizer nutrients.
NPK 101
Nitrogen (N) is required by every living cell. It’s a fundamental building block of plant proteins that improve crop yield and quality and is essential for proper animal nutrition and maturation, and is a crucial component of fertilizer, as it’s essential for protein synthesis and speeds up plant growth.
Our high-quality phosphate (P) rock enables the production of many products, including solid and liquid fertilizers, feed and industrial acids. Phosphate is a crucial component of fertilizer, as it’s required for energy storage and transfer, and speeds up crop maturity.
Potash (K) is an essential crop nutrient that contributes to improving crop yields worldwide. It’s necessary to protect and restore soil fertility, and is a crucial component of fertilizer, as it improves root and stem strength, water use and disease resistance.
