Driving a more sustainable future

For Nutrien, Feeding the Future includes being stewards of our environment, so generations that come after us can continue to feed a growing population. That’s why Nutrien Ag Solutions has joined the Ecosystem Services Market Consortium (ESMC) as a Founding Circle member.

The ESMC was launched in February 2019 by a host of private and nonprofit organizations, with a goal of incentivizing growers to use farming practices that support water conservation and reduce carbon emissions. The consortium is working to develop a framework where greenhouse gas reduction credits are given to growers who adopt conservation practices. The more sustainable your farm is, the more credits you receive.

“Sustainable agriculture is extremely important for Nutrien and our grower customers, so we are proud to be a founding member of the ESMC,” says Mike Frank, Executive Vice President & CEO of Retail. “We believe that good environmental stewardship and good economics can – and must – go hand in hand, and we look forward to collaborating with our ESMC partners to continue to bring these priorities together.”

The ESMC will drive further development of cost-effective analytical tools and technologies that will help growers understand and measure how sustainable their operations are. Nutrien already offers some of the industry’s most advanced technologies in this space, helping farmers to assign values to sustainable practices, meaning we will play a key role in helping the ESCM to meet its objectives.

“We are excited to have Nutrien as a member of the ESMC,” says Debbie Reed, Executive Director of the consortium. “The agronomic expertise and strong farmer relationships that Nutrien brings to the table will really help to scale our ecosystem service market opportunities for farmers across the country.”

Some other notable Founding Circle and Legacy Partner members include Cargill, General Mills, McDonald’s USA and The Nature Conservancy.
