Nutrien’s N&P Emergency Response Teams mobilized in Mobile, Alabama for its annual emergency response competition
Since 2008 our Nitrogen and Phosphate sites have taken safety to the next level by hosting an annual, in-house Emergency Response Competition. This year, teams from Augusta, Georgia; Aurora, North Carolina; Geismar, Louisiana; Lima, Ohio; Redwater, Alberta, and Trinidad gathered in Mobile, Alabama to compete in complex emergency response scenarios.
“The emergency response team competitions are incredibly important and some of my favorite events of the year,” says John Horne, Vice-President, SH&E. “The competition provides an opportunity to demonstrate the team’s skills but more importantly, it provides an opportunity to learn and take that learning back to their sites and help other responders.”
Over two days at The Gulf Coast Emergency Response Academy, the teams participated in six different real-life scenarios designed to mimic potential emergencies that could occur at our sites. From confined space, firefighter challenges, hazmat, high-angle rescue, medical and a proficiency exam, the goal of the competition is clear: to continuously improve our emergency response teams and ensuring they are well-prepared to handle any situation that may arise. This event serves as a training opportunity, allowing teams to put their skills to the test in a controlled environment.
“We hope we never need to utilize our emergency response teams, but we know that often the difference between a catastrophic outcome and one where the injured worker goes home to their family is the skill and commitment of our emergency responders,” says John. “What they do is bigger than work, it is a calling, and I am so proud and grateful that at Nutrien we have some of the best.”
Teams were scored based on their consistent performance across all the scenarios and Nutrien’s Augusta Nitrogen facility was awarded the 2024 Overall Winner, followed by our Redwater Nitrogen facility as the 2024 Runner-up (and the team's first year participating in this competition).

Thank you for your outstanding contributions and for upholding the highest standards of emergency preparedness.”
