A unique, inclusive approach to addressing community food security

People in our communities, our neighbors and friends, are struggling with getting healthy food on their tables. 

Nutrien is Feeding the Future, in part through high impact community partnerships designed to address food security in the communities where we live and work.  

We work with community partners who share our values and our desire to really make an impact on the challenge of hunger. In Calgary, one of our key partners is I Can for Kids, who take a unique, research-based approach to food security. Their research shows that getting grocery gift cards to food-insecure families boosts their social, emotional, financial, and physical well-being. 

“Support from donors enables I Can for Kids to assist more of the 75,000 food-insecure kids across Calgary whose families struggle to meet all their basic needs,” explains Bobbi Turko, Executive Director for I Can for Kids. “Your contributions are the lifeblood of our efforts, and we cannot thank you enough.” 

In Calgary, the rate of food insecurity has soared to 1 in 4 kids across the city. To help get healthy food to kids in an efficient and effective way, we’re partnering with I Can for Kids in two ways: 

Matching Donations  

For the remainder of 2023, Nutrien will match the first $100,000 in donations to I Can for Kids. Meaning, by donating to the organization’s grocery gift card program, you can double the impact of your contributions. 

Chuck a Puck with the Calgary Hitmen 

During several Calgary Hitmen home games this season, fans will have the chance to buy foam pucks to chuck on the ice for the chance to win prizes. At Nutrien sponsored games, all funds raised go directly to I Can for Kids. On the December 15 Feeding the Future Night, over $2,300 was raised. Upcoming fundraising games are January 7 and 26, 2024.

Our impact-focused approach to community investment is designed to make sure we’re meaningfully contributing to food system security in our communities. Working with others helps us gain a deeper understanding of what will really help us get to a point where all community members have access to food and we have also removed barriers to food security.
